Bodily changes during puberty: Breast growth

One of the first changes you may notice is that your breasts will start to grow. This usually begins with small, firm lumps (called breast buds) forming under your nipples. Your breasts will grow and change shape over time. As your breasts grow, you might notice or experience some of the following things.

  • Some pain, soreness, or tenderness in the chest is common as breasts grow
  • The areolas (the skin around the nipple) often become larger and darker
  • One breast may grow faster or appear larger than the other (this is normal and usually evens out)
  • The skin on the breasts may feel itchy due to stretching
  • Stretch marks may appear as the skin stretches during growth

At the end of puberty, everyone’s breasts will look different. You may notice your breasts are different shapes or sizes from your friends. This does not mean that anything is wrong – everyone’s body is different!
